When a backhoe loader goes down on the job, time is money. Recently, our team was called out to Point Venture, TX, to help a contractor with a John Deere backhoe loader that had lost hydraulic pressure. What started as a suspected minor issue turned into a full teardown to replace the hydraulic pump and we were ready for it.
Initial Inspection and Diagnosis
The contractor reported that the loader arm was slow to respond, and unusual noises were coming from the hydraulic system. Upon arrival, our team ran a full hydraulic pressure test and quickly determined that the hydraulic pump was the culprit. It had lost efficiency and could no longer deliver the pressure needed to operate the machine.
Careful Disassembly Begins
To access the hydraulic pump, we had to partially disassemble the Deere backhoe loader. This involved removing protective panels, loader arms, and control linkages to reach the pump located deep within the machine’s frame. Each step required precision to ensure nothing was damaged and that everything could be reassembled correctly.
The Hydraulic Pump Replacement

After reaching the pump, we found signs of internal wear likely caused by contaminated hydraulic fluid and long-term use. We safely removed the worn pump and replaced it with a new OEM unit. This upgrade would provide better performance and extend the life of the equipment.
Testing and Reassembly
With the new pump installed, we reassembled the backhoe carefully, reconnecting all lines, bolts, and fittings to factory specs. After refilling the hydraulic fluid and bleeding the system, we fired up the machine for a full test. The difference was immediate strong, responsive hydraulics and smooth operation all around.
